From Hardship to Leadership: Kavida’s Journey in Mannar
In the quiet village of Padapaddi in Talaimannar, Kavida’s life took a painful turn when her husband went missing shortly after their marriage. Left alone while expecting her first child, she faced the immense challenge of survival with no support and no income. But instead of giving up, she chose to build her own path forward.
Determined to care for her child, Kavida turned to palmyra handicrafts, learning the skill from scratch and slowly building a small income. As she grew in confidence, she brought other struggling women into the craft, creating a supportive space for them to learn, earn, and rebuild their lives.
Over the years, her small initiative blossomed into a community movement. Today, 25 women work alongside her, producing high-quality palmyra products and sustaining their families with pride. For the past year, she has also been part of Palms Together, benefiting enormously from its support and guidance.
Thanks to funding from the ADF, Kavida is now running a training course for 20 women, helping a new generation gain skills and economic independence.
Her journey—from loss to leadership—stands as an inspiring example of how courage and community can transform lives, one woman at a time.
